The shock absorber has at least two tubes sliding in one another. The outer tube is a guide tube (1) with a projection extending radially inwards. The projection engages a recess (8) in the wall of an inner part (2). The dimensions of the guide tube and inner part are such that the inner part slides into the guide tube by expansion of the projection, when there is a collision. Preferably, the inner part is of a high-strength plastics and the guide tube is of steel, aluminum or aluminum alloy.
