In the input area of a sorting device flat objects (1) are conveyed on two levels by means of belt-like, revolving conveyor means (12, 13). Both conveyor means are divided into identical sections and together revolve around an idler pulley (7) with which they are meshed and where the objects (1) are carefully transferred from one conveyor means to the other. One conveyor means comprises carriers (11) for creating the sections while the other conveyor means presents connecting elements (5) into which the carriers (11) dip as they revolve around the idler pulley (7) as well as elastic, preloaded cover bands (6) which expand in accordance with the thickness and stiffness of the object being conveyed.
