A first substrate (1) and a second substrate (2) are bonded to each other with a specified spacing by an outer seal part (3). A signal electrode (20) and a counter electrode (21) are opposed. A voltage is applied to a liquid crystal layer (18) sealed in the spacing so as to increase the transmittance. The signal electrode (20) is constituted by a target electrode (5), a wiring electrode (8), and a peripheral electrode (11). A wiring seal part (6) made of a transparent sealing material is provided in a counter part between the wiring electrode (8) and the counter electrode (21). The transmittance of the counter part is always almost the same as that of the part of the liquid crystal layer (18) to which the voltage is applied. Thus, the whole display area can be put into a transmitting state while no voltage is applied.
