To lay a band of yarn (52) in the hooks of two spaced transport chains, the yarns are held under a constant tension by a brake system (3) at the yarn layer (2) before entry into the multiple yarn guide (301). The section (52a) of the yarns between the brake (3) and the hooks (11') of the first group of chain hooks is tensed by moving guides (35,351) while the yarn layer (2) has a change of direction movement. The brake (3) is moved in relation to the guides at the yarn layer (2) to tense the yarn band section (52a). The brake (3) and the multiple yarn layer (301) are moved vertically together, in relation to the yarn layer (2), to lay the yarn band (52) in the retaining hooks (12') and to tense the yarn band section (52a). An Independent claim is included for an appts. to lay a band or yarns on the hooks of spaced transport chains with brake units (3) at the yarn layer (2), to apply tension to a section (52a) of the band of yarns (52) together with the multiple yarn guide (301) and a moving yarn guide (35). Preferred Features: The brakes form a spring-loaded grid yarn tensioner (3,34,35) with vertical movement at the yarn layer (2), on a common carrier (305) with the multiple yarn guide (301), moved vertically by a drive motor (204). The grid yarn tensioner (3,34,35) is wholly or partially of grid rods (341,342,351) moving independently to apply different tensions with separate stroke movements. The grid yarn tensioner can be immovable at the yarn layer (2), with a moving sprung yarn tensioner with at least one grid rod between the grid yarn tensioner and the multiple yarn guide (301), with at least one grid rod. The grid rods of the grid yarn tensioner, on the side towards the multiple yarn guide (301), can rotate slightly round their longitudinal axes. The moving tensioning lever (34) of the grid yarn tensioner (3) has a tensioning arm (343) linked to a spring (344), and it can be swung out to give an unrestricted manipulation of the band of yarns (51,52). During the swing movement, the tensioning arm (343) is moved through the extended connecting line between the fixed point (345) of the spring (344) and the swing axis of the tensioning lever (34). The grid rods rotate freely on their holders, with common or separate controlled brakes.
