A cannula (16) is provided for connection with an implanted artificial port (10) through a preformed needle track (17) through the skin of a patient. The port (10) has a flow conduit (12) to connect with the body lumen, the closure member (40) for blocking flow between the port (10), and the body lumen. The first cannula (16) has a proximal end which is connected to a hub, a proximal portion (16a) adjacent to the proximal end, and a distal portion (16b). The distal portion (16b) is of insufficient size to open the closure member (40) when inserted into the port (10), so that to the first cannula (16) may be used for flushing the implanted port interior, and the needle track (17) with disinfectant solution (20). The proximal portion (16a) is proportioned to dilate the needle track (17) to facilitate subsequent advancement of a larger diameter fluid flow cannula (50) through the needle track (17) after withdrawing of the first cannula (16).
