PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a device thin and small by arranging a lighting optical system, a color light separation optical system, plural emitting direction control type modulators, plural optical path adjusting optical systems, and a color light synthesizing optical system, generally on a plane so that the center axes of the light passing each of these are brought to generally on the same plane. SOLUTION: The light emitted from a lighting optical system 100 is separated into each color light of red, blue and green in a color light separation optical system 200. Then, the light showing an image in each color is emitted in DMD 300R, 300G and 300B for each color light and synthesized in a second cross dichroic prism 500 to form image light showing a color image. In other words, the optical systems are constituted by separating them by each color and arranged in inclination so that light is made incident horizontally on the DMD 300R, 300G and 300B for each color light. As a result, elements constituting each optical system can be arranged on a plane, enabling the arrangement space to be thin and small for the optical systems of the device 1000.
