PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new metal complex of a salicylic acid derivative or its salt compound, colorless or pale colored, excellent in environmental safety, stability and dispersibility in an integrating resin, and useful for an electrophotographic toner, an electrostatic powder coating, etc. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [A is H, ammonium, an ammonium compound, an alkali (alkaline earth) metal or the like; (k) is 0-8; R1 is H, hydroxyl, a halogen, an (substituted) alkyl, an (substituted) aryl, an (substituted) amino, a (substituted) sulfonyl or the like; R2 is H or an alkyl; (1) is 0-4]. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reacting an salicylic acid derivative and an alkaline agent with a divalent cationic compound of an oxocomplex as a central metal-giving agent in a solvent, then treating the reaction product through a process of single crystalline growth to form the compound of formula I, such as a compound of formula II. 3,5-Di-tert-butylsalicylic acid is preferably used as the salicylic acid derivative to prepare the metal complex or its salt compound.
