PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a shaft member having a tapered portion high in surface roughness and in accuracy. SOLUTION: This method of forming comprises a preliminary forming process, in which the preliminary forging is achieved on a columnar stock to form a preliminarily formed stock having a preliminary column portion, a tapering process in which the preliminary column portion of the preliminarily formed stock is drawn in a condition, where the lubricating oil is fed to a forming die to form an intermediate formed stock having the preliminary taper which is inclined with respect to an axis, a degreasing process to clean and dry the intermediate formed stock having the preliminary taper, and a finishing process to form a tapered portion by achieving the sizing to finish the cleaned nd dried preliminary taper into a prescribed dimension.
