PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce a polyolefin by using a transition metal compound having an electron attractive amide ligand and an activating promoter as a catalyst for polymerizing an olefin. SOLUTION: (A) A transition metal compound represented by formula I (M is a transition metal selected from Ti, Zr and Hf; X is H, a halogen, a 1-20C hydrocarbon, a silicon-containing hydrocarbon, an alkoxy or amino; R1 is a 1-20C hydrocarbon or a 1-20C heteroatom-containing hydrocarbon; and Q is an electron attractive substituent group) and having the electron attractive amide ligand, preferably a compound represented by formula II (R2 is a 1-20C hydrocarbon, a 1-20C heteroatom-containing hydrocarbon or the like) e.g. titanium[bis(dimethylamido)bis(N-methyl-methanesulfonamide)]) and (B) an activating promoter (e.g. methylaluminoxane) are combined and used as a catalyst for polymerizing an olefin.
