PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain spacers for a liquid crystal display element having an excellent dispersing property, without adversely affecting a liquid crystal, namely without disturbing its alignment or the like, making the liquid crystal display element with high quality display performance obtainable. SOLUTION: The spacers for a liquid crystal display element is provided with a coating layer comprising a graft polymer formed on surfaces of fine particles. The coating layer comprising the graft polymer is formed by reacting the fine particles with a monomer having a reactive functional group and a polymerizable double bond in its molecule to form a functional group-containing layer on the surface of the fine particles, and subsequently by reacting the functional group in the functional group-containing layer with a compound having two or more functional groups which can react with the functional group.
