the system includes grouping aerials to provide a defined area within which differential tariff rates may apply. A number of neighbouring terminals (BAi, BBi) are distributed spatially to allow radio communication with user's portable mobile telephones over an extended geographical coverage area. A central management station (100) relays the communications for a number of users within the geographic area to a telephone network, and records the tariffs of the calls from these users for the benefit of the operator. A group (BAi) of the terminals may be arranged such that they provide coverage within a chosen perimeter (P), and the charge rate of calls may be modified if they pass through this particular group of terminals.
