<p>The method involves continuously monitoring a signal representing the control variable X (18) using an error detector (26). An error signal is generated if an abnormal status of the control variable is detected, and used to control a switching unit (28). When an error signal is present, the control unit (24) of the position controller is deactivated in relation to a signal representing the control variable Y so that the signal and/or variation of the signal have no influence on the control variable Y, and a control unit (30) is activated via the switching unit. When the control unit is active, a second output signal (32) for the input variable W (14) is generated by the control unit to form the control variable Y (22).
