The nutcracker has hinged jaws ( 5, 6). The first jaw (6) is connected at the end furthest from the hinge (11) to a guide (3) for a rod (2) which is connected to the other jaw (5). This can be moved to close the jaws by pulling on a trigger (10) attached to a hand grip (12). A spring-loaded catch (8, 16) at the handle end can be released to allow the rod to return to its original position.
