PRECISION DIRECT DRIVE MECHANISM FOR A POWER ASSIST APPARATUS FOR A BICYCLE

A power assist apparatus which includes a battery pack (90) that connects with a motor housing (104) with the battery pack (90) being removably mounted on the frame (44) of the bicycle (10) and the motor housing (104) being mounted on a mounting plate (120) which is carried by one of the support wheels (14) of the bicycle. The power assist apparatus is designed to not only assist in the manual operation of the bicycle but also as a sole source of power for the bicycle. The mounting plate (120) is to be affixed to the frame (44) of the bicycle upon the desired location being selected for the mounting plate (120). The motor assembly (104) operates a drive gear (108), pulley (164) or sprocket (170) which connects to a driven gear (110), pulley (160) or sprocket (168) which is mounted in conjunction with one of the support wheels of the bicycle. The motor housing (104) may be disconnectable from the mounting plate (120).
