This invention relates to catches, latches and bolts and in particular to an apparatus (34) for capturing a catch, latch or bolt (30) so as to assist in the locking of a closure element (10) over, in or across an opening. A latching element or lock bolt capturing apparatus is described which is designed for use with a latching element or lock bolt (30) that extends out of a closure element (10) that extends across an opening in a frame (12). The apparatus comprises a housing located in the frame (12) which has an aperture (38) which is aligned with an aperture in the frame so that the latching element or lock bolt (30) may enter and exit laterally of the housing. There is also a shutter (40) within the housing moveable between a first non-locking position so that the latching element or lock bolt can pass through the aperture in the housing and a second locking position so that the latching element or lock bolt is lockingly retained within the housing. There is also an actuation means (52, 56) arranged to move the shutter between the non-locking and locking positions, wherein movement of the shutter is independent of the movement of the latch or lock bolt into or out of the housing. There is no contact required between the latching element or lock bolt for the shutter to operate between its locking position or its non-locking position. Such an arrangement can be advantageously used with keyless entry systems for new and retro-fit locking arrangements.
