An earpiece comprises a main body with at least an earphone connected. A switch for controlling the status of the device is mounted on the main body of the earpiece. Embodiments include a switch positioned to facilitate switching when inserting earphone into ear, a switch responsive to insertion of the earphone into the ear and a switch activated by movement of the earphone relative to the speaker. Embodiments also include a microphone connected to the main body and a cable for connection to a mobile phone for hands-free use.
