A carbon monoxide detector is used In combination with a garage door opener. The carbon monoxide detector detects an excess concentration of carbon monoxide and generates an alarm signal. A mechanism is responsive to the alarm signal for operating the garage door opener to ventilate the garage when carbon monoxide builds up in the garage beyond an acceptable level.
