A vane for a hydraulic turbine, or for a hydraulic pump, has a profiled shape with two flow surfaces (3) and is rotated about a support axis (1) to match the attitude of the vane to suit the flow conditions. The end edges (4) of the vane are shaped for minimum drag and at least one of the profiled surfaces is curved against the axis of rotation. This improves the flow control and thereby the efficiency of the turbine/pump.
