A method for controlling an infinitely variable transmission in a vehicle has an automatic setting and a manual setting. In the manual setting the driver can also set the required speed of the vehicle. The speed selection can be via an infinitely variable setting or in discrete increments. The speed setting is via a separate control positioned away from the normal transmission controls.
