PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical reading method by which a reading sheet in which marks, images, printed or handwritten characters coexist can be read at high speed and for which setting of reading definition of the reading sheet is not required whenever conversion data is changed even when the data read by an optical reader is converted into the data required by a user. SOLUTION: In this method, information about the marks, the printed or handwritten characters and graphics, etc., on the reading sheet 1 is optically read, optically and read character data is transmitted to plural recognizing means 12, 13, 14, the character data is recognized by the plural recognizing means 12, 13, 14, mark data, graphic data and character recognition data recognized by the plural recognizing means are synthesized by this optical reading method.
