PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the operation of a protection element in trimming a heating element to adjust a resistance value of the heating element, where the protection element cuts a low-melting point metal body by fusion or trips a PTC element by current-carrying heating of the heating element. SOLUTION: This protection element 1A has a heating element 6A on a substrate 2, and a low-melting point metal body 4 or a PTC element. Heat generation of the heating element 6A causes fusion cutting of the low-melting point metal body 4 or tripping of the PTC element. A current-carrying direction in the heating element 6A is set to the short direction of the heating element 6A, while the heating element 6A is formed with a trimming 7 in the long direction of the heating element 6A from sides 6p, 6q facing each other in the long direction.
