Short or long-term storage of nuclear waste comprises constructing storage sites beneath mine spoil tips, e.g. from coal mines. Preferred Features: The tips are of sterile mineral material, compact at the base and suitable for the storage of nuclear waste in containers, generally metal barrels of 200 liter capacity. Tunnels are bored through the tips at ground level, e.g. in a north-south or east-west direction, and the containers of waste are located in cells off the tunnels, where they are accessible for constant monitoring. A tip used for storage may be surrounded by a continuous wall for retention or protection. |
