The device (1) has a crank drive that can be slide out of a rest position into an easily accessible and freely rotating working position. An inner rod (3) or tube slides in an outer tube (2). The inner rod and outer tube have non-circular cross-section profiles, so that the inner part can not rotate inside the outer tube. Preferably, the cross-sectional profile is hexagonal and the inner rod and outer tube are formed in an extrusion machine. An Independent claim is included for a desk or other furniture item incorporating the height-adjustment device.
