The protective device when inflated lies between the occupant of the vehicle and side structure of the vehicle. An inflation unit(10) inflates the protective device and keeps it in an inflated state for at least five seconds. The inflation unit has at least one vessel(30) with a gas(52) stored under pressure, and is free from pyrotechnic material. A first outlet(70) connected to the vessel releases inflating gas at a relatively high speed or rate over a relatively short period of time, and a second outlet(90) releasing gas at a relatively low speed over a longer period of time.
