Production of polymers (I) that contain at least one double bond and have pendant carbonyl-based functional groups comprises (a) reacting a polymer (II) containing at least one double bond with an aluminum derivative in an inert hydrocarbon solvent (b) functionalizing the product with an electrophilic reagent; and (c) stopping the functionalization reaction.
