PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon with propylene in the presence of a strongly acidic solid catalyst. SOLUTION: This method reacts, in the presence of (A) a strongly acidic solid catalyst, preferably (i) zirconia carrying sulfate group, (ii) titania carrying sulfate group, (iii) zirconia carrying tungsten oxide, (iv) titania carrying tungsten oxide, or (v) perfluoroalkyl sulfonate resin, (B) an aromatic compound, e.g. benzene or toluene with (C) propylene, preferably at 100 to 350 deg.C and 1 to 50 atm. It is preferable, when the component B is benzene, that the component B/component C molar ratio is set at (1:1) to (5:1). The component (i) for the component A is obtained by firing zirconium hydroxide in the air after diluted sulfuric acid is passed therethrough, and the component (v) is obtained by copolymerizing perfluoroepoxide and vinyl sulfonate.
