PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of an overshoot and an undershoot. SOLUTION: The contour emphasis device is provided with a 1st delay means that delays an input signal s1 for a prescribed time, a 2nd delay means that delays an output signal s2 from the 1st delay means by a prescribed time furthermore, and a quadratic differential signal generating means that outputs a quadratic differential signal s5 of the input signal on the basis of the input signal s1 and output signals s2, s3 of the 1st and 2nd delay means. The contour emphasis device is also provided with contour emphasis signal generating means 10, 11, 13-17, 19 that generate a contour emphasis signal s15 by adding a sign s9 of the quadratic differential signal to a minimum absolute value among a difference s10 between the input signal and the output signal of the 1st delay means, a difference s11 between the output signals of the 1st and 2nd delay means, and the quadratic differential signal s5 and with delay sum means 3, 20 that output a signal emphasizing the contour of the input signal by summing the contour emphasis signal and the input signal with the delay times of which are made coincident.
