A pair of locking pliers (10) includes: a body (12) having a fixed jaw (14) that is fixedly positioned with respect to the body (12); a movable jaw (22) mounted to the body (12) to pivot about a hinge pin (26); an operating lever (34) pivotably mounted to the movable jaw (22); and an over-center locking linkage (38) coupled between the operating lever (34) and the body (12). The fixed jaw (14) is provided with a fixed extension (16). The fixed extension (16) is provided with a fixed clamping element. The movable jaw (22) is provided with a movable extension (28). Said movable extension (28) includes a movable clamping element. The movable extension (28) is attached to the movable jaw (22). The fixed and movable clamping elements are in opposed, clamping relationship. The movable jaw (22) is shaped such that the movable extension (28) slides along the fixed extension (16) as the movable jaw (22) is pivoted closed with the operating lever (34) in order to provide an axial clamping action.
