PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize that diffracted light itself generates specific polarized light such as circularly or linearly polarized light by transferring a diffraction pattern of a diffraction element substrate to a cholesteric alignment film under conditions of specific elevated temp. and pressure in order to form an area capable of exhibiting diffraction ability at a part of the film. SOLUTION: A diffraction pattern of a diffraction element substrate is transferred to a cholesteric alignment film at 40 to 300 deg.C and at 0.05 to 80 MPa in order to form an area capable of exhibiting diffraction ability at a part of the film. The preferable conditions at the time of transferring the diffraction pattern to the cholesteric alignment film is such that the temp. is generally 40 to 300 deg.C, preferably 70 to 180 deg.C and the pressure is 0.05 to 80 MPa, preferably 0.1 to 20 MPa. Though the time required for the transferring process depends on the kinds of liquid crystal materials constituting the cholesteric liquid crystal layer, film forms, the quality of the material forming the diffraction pattern, the time is generally >=0.01 sec, preferably 0.05 sec to 1 min.
