The pipe is continuously rolled onto a drum. The inclined pipe support is a beam with a curve guiding the pipe off the drum and into position when the beam is in position. The curve has a neck or pulley and the upper end of the beam is U-shaped. The beam is locked to the support by a structural member and a screw. The work station can be moved within the vessel, in particular along its longitudinal axis. The pipe support is a tower which allows the work station to be moved on or across the tower. The work station includes a floor for people to move on and a platform carrying the means of feeding the welding heads placed next to the assembly plane. The work station includes a carousel which carries the welding supplies and which can be moved from an operating position to a retracted position. The work station includes two cabins which can be substituted for each other, one containing the means of joining the pipe and the other containing means of carrying out additional work on the pipe. Each cabin contains a carousel.
