COMBINED MAGNETITE AND ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERS FOR PURIFYING A FLUID STREAM

A filter and method are provided for purifying a fluid stream such as a drinking water stream or breathable air stream. The filter comprises an active agent of adsorbent materials including a substantially uniform mixture of magnetite and activated carbon (fibers preferentially) in a composite structure. The method involves passing a contaminated fluid stream through the filter, adsorbing and entrapping contaminants on the surfaces of the magnetite particles and activated carbon and recovering the decontaminated fluid stream.
