Before the start of the exhaust stroke and as they approach the bottom dead center, the trailing limit edges of the sealing ring or strip nearest the combustion space free openings either singly or jointly in the path of the cylinders or expansion chambers with the result that the combustion gases with their appreciable tension and heat direct air or fuel tangentialy into one or several expansion chambers. Thus once the exhaust valve port has been freed, the stored gases necessarily expand and so burst out of the expansion chamber and so exert the desired influence of the exhaust process as a whole. With appropriate dimensioning of the chamber, the associated combustion noise can be noticeably reduced. The surge of combustion gases can be usefully employed for e.g. turbocharger drive etc.
