The method involves detecting a parameter giving a measure of the vibration characteristic of the internal combustion engine or of the endless chain using a sensor. A chain adjuster (10) applies a predetermined biasing force based on the sensor data. One or more characteristic parameters of the engine may be determined, such as the rotation speed, load, especially torque.
