The apparatus to clean and/or sharpen the sawtooth wires, as a card or roller clothing, has a guide (20) to move the working tool (10) along a defined path. The guide (20) has at least two adjustable guide sections (22,24), between a working position and a transport position. In the working position, they move along a path section which is longer than when they are in the transport position. The guide sections (22,24) are linked together on a joint axis (46), across the movement path, and preferably as a folding hinge (40). A stabilizer (50) to stabilize the guide sections (22,24) is fitted to at least one of the guide sections (22,24), in a release mounting. The stabilizer (50) has a T-shaped cross section, at right angles to the movement path, working with at least one spacer (56) to give an intermediate space to hold at least part of the joint (40) at least at one guide section (22,24). The stabilizer (50) and/or the hinge joint (40) has at least one coupling zone, along the movement path, to give a positive fit link with a complementary coupling zone of the guide sections. The stabilizer (50) and/or the hinge joint (40) are at an opposite side of the guide (20) to the clothing being cleaned/sharpened, in the working position. The cleaning/sharpening tool (10) is moved by a continuous toothed drive belt (18), which passes round a drive roller and deflection rollers, to move the tool (10) along a defined path. The drive belt (18) is linked to a working section (12) of the tool (10) by a release coupling (16). A limit stop (38) defines the movement length of the coupling (16), detached from the tool (10). The coupling (16) has a limit section to prevent full penetration into the guide groove after separation from the tool (10). At least one guide section (22,24) is along the working path, with a guide groove to take the guide section (14a) of the tool (10). The guide groove opens into a hollow zone to take the drive belt (18).
