PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dot matrix type image display device capable of executing discrimination of the kind of an image signal at high speed, and displaying an image properly adapting to an optional image signal. SOLUTION: An inputted image signal is split by a sink separator 12 into information of each horizontal and vertical frequencies and a synchronizing signal, and compared with information of specifications of many image signals memorized in an internal ROM by a micro-computer 13, to determine the kind of the image signal. After determination of the kind of the image signal, the micro-computer 13 reads information relative to control of the signal, and controls a PLL circuit 15 and an image signal conversion device 17, by referring correction data memorized in an EEPROM 14. The image signal from an input terminal 11 is sampled properly by a clock synchronized with a dot clock by an A/D converter 16 and converted into a digital signal, and converted into a signal suitable for display on a liquid crystal panel 18 by the image signal conversion device 17, and applied on the liquid crystal panel 18.
