A structure with a matrix for immobilizing a biomass having affinity for metal ions is obtained by (i) warming to above 30 deg C a suspension of the biomass in a solution containing the matrix components; and (ii) dripping the warmed product into a precipitation bath to give spheres solidified only at the surface (i.e. hollow spheres) or solidified all the way through. There is an Independent claim for such structures made using matrix components comprising cellulose, cellulose derivatives, Na cellulose sulfate and/or sulfoethyl cellulose, the spheres being of the surface-solidified (i.e. hollow) type.
