PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a card reader capable of easily putting in/out an SIM card to be inserted to a portable telephone especially, and equipment using the reader. SOLUTION: A reader 18 for a smart card S for portable telephone is provided with a base plate 40 for holding conductive contact suitable for engagement with the corresponding conductive contact of the card and a means for guiding and driving the card in an inserting direction D1 between a card grip position, where the card can be accessed, and a using position for holding the card at a suitable position on the base plate 40. The card guiding and driving means has a means for fixing the card in the inserting direction D1 and is provided with a movable slide-in unit 42 for supporting the card so that the card can be moved while sliding on the base plate 40 between an engaging position setting the card at the using position and a non-engaging position setting the card at the grip position.
