PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wide angle zoom lens in which the optical entire length of not only a wide angle end but also a telephoto end is made short and a telephoto ratio is made smaller than heretofore even though it has a high variable power rate for the intention of the miniaturization of a camera. SOLUTION: This zoom lens is composed of the first lens group G1 of positive refracting power, the second lens group G2 of negative refracting power, the third lens group G3 of the positive refracting power and the fourth lens group G4 of the negative refracting power, and respective lens groups are moved to an object side at the time of variable power from a wide angle side to a telephoto side, and also are moved so that an interval between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 is increased and that between the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4 is reduced, and satisfy the condition of the focal distances of the first lens group G1 and the fourth lens group G4, the condition of the moving amount of the fourth lens group G4 and the condition of a variable power ratio carried by the fourth lens group G4.
