PURPOSE: A method for erasing magnetic tape recording signals of a high definition VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) is provided to make a high definition head for treble speed perform a recording mode, and to selectively switch an unused head for treble speed into an oscillatory circuit, so as to prevent an over lap section generation. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer(30) decides whether predetermined key signals are inputted from a key input unit(40). If a recording mode key signal is detected, the microcomputer(30) switches a switch(53) within a deck(50) into an oscillatory circuit(51). A head for treble speed(54) erases contents recorded in a magnetic tape. A high definition head for treble speed(55) performs a recording mode. If a special playing key signal is detected, the microcomputer(30) switches the switch(53) into a pre-amplifier(52). The head for treble speed(54) reads signals recorded in the magnetic tape, and transmits the signals to a playing processor(60). If a playing key signal is detected, the microcomputer(30) reads the signals recorded in the magnetic tape, in a standard mode. If a stop key signal is detected, the microcomputer(30) stops a VCR(Video Cassette Recorder).
