PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a user to effectively make full use of messages whose storage item number is limited. SOLUTION: The automatic telephone answering function setting system for a portable telephone to record and reproduce a message of an opposite party is provided with a storage circuit 103 that stores names and telephone numbers of opposite parties and also stores opposite parties whose message recording is rejected while distinguishing them from the others and with a control system circuit 109 that records no message of an opposite party that is a rejected opposite party even when a caller number is indicated to a call to the portable telephone and the storage circuit 103 stores a name and a telephone number of the caller after the result of retrieving and collating the storage circuit 103.
