PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an epoxy resin which is cured by heating or light and yields a cured product exerting excellent properties such as heat resistance, moisture resistance, adhesion to substrates, etc., and a composition thereof, and also to provide an alkaline-developing resin which shows a rapid developability and yields a cured coated film showing good mechanical properties and a composition thereof. SOLUTION: This novolak epoxy resin has a structure wherein aromatic rings having substituents are linked together via alkylene bonds. Here, a portion or all of the aromatic rings has a substituent having an alcoholic hydroxyl group and a substituent having an epoxy group via an oxygen atom directly bound to the aromatic ring, at different carbon atoms.
