PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject method ensuring a fabric or half-finished product to be neatly pleated through securing a space for 'shrinkage' in conducting a pleating operation by making use of a heat-shrinkable sheet. SOLUTION: This pleating method comprises the following practice: a laminate 10 made by sewing together a heat-shrinkable sheet and a fabric or semi- finished product made of cloth through water-soluble threads is disposed between a table plate 21 and a press plate 22, and a specified gap C is provided at least between the laminate 10 and the press plate 22 and the sheet is then shrunk in the gap C by the heat supplied from the table plate 21 to effect shrinkage of the fabric or semi-finished product to accomplish pleating it followed by dissolving the water-soluble threads in water to detach the sheet from the fabric or semi-finished product which, in turn, is dried.
