A lift-striking type stud welding head, with a stepping motor-driven stud holder (18) spring-biased relative to a support (19), is new. A lift-striking type stud welding head has a stepping motor (15) for axial displacement of a stud holder (18) with respect to a support (19) which is pressed onto a workpiece surface during welding, the stud holder (18) being spring (17) mounted relative to the support (19). Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a welding apparatus including the above welding head; and (ii) a stud welding process employing the above welding head.
