A laser device for generating a high bit rate length product is indicated which comprises a fibre-optic waveguide (1) and a laser device (2) which can be modulated. The laser device (2) radiates single-mode light pulses with a rectangular or quasi-rectangular pulse shape, the light pulses undergoing a pulse narrowing during propagation in the fibre-optic waveguide (1) up to the transmission length (L0).
