PURPOSE: A position of sensing system and the method are provided to sense the correct position of a crane by assuming the moving distance of the crane with a moving distance converting factor due to the number of pulses from an encoder, the diameter of a hoisting drum and a trolley wheel and the number of motor rotations. CONSTITUTION: A moving distance of a hoisting drum(13) in one rotation is calculated by a formula which is (pi)x(the diameter of the hoisting drum). An estimating unit(41) for a moving distance converting factor calculates the number of pulses from a hoisting encoder(14) while the hoisting drum is rotated one time. The number of pulses is calculated by a formula which is (the number of a hoisting motor rotations during one time of a hoisting drum rotation)x(the number of pulses from the hoisting encoder during one time of the hoisting drum). After the calculations, the estimating unit calculates the moving distance of the hoisting drum during one pulse of the hoisting encoder. Therefore, the real position of a crane is assumed by accumulating the results of the calculations.
