PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radio wave absorbing material, exhibiting high heat resistance and flame resistance which is lightweight and can be easily processed and formed. SOLUTION: A silica glass fiber cloth is manufactured by treating a commercially available E-type glass fiber cloth with acid as a sample for radio wave absorbability test. After a 10% nickel nitrate solution is sprayed on the silica glass fiber cloth, benzene sulfonated acid is made to flow with nitrogen gas as carrier in a closed tube-type furnace. In this way, a glass fiber cloth with its surfaces covered with carbon is manufactured. The radio wave absorbability of the cloth is tested and characteristics as shown in the figure are obtained. Also, when the cloth is heated at 750±5 deg.C, its reduction in weight is 1% or less. When the cloth is put in a microwave oven (rated output: 500 W and oscillation frequency: 2,450 MHz) and the oven is switched on, the cloth glows but after that its reduction in weight is 1% or less. Accordingly, it has been established that the cloth exhibits high heat resistance and generates a low degree of heating, even when it is subjected to strong radio waves.
