PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance precision of shading correction. SOLUTION: In this shading correction method, a CPU 8 allows a camera 5 to photograph a white paper sheet and obtains a maximum value Lmax of image data obtained from an A/D converter 6. Then the CPU 8 calculates a value Lmax/L-SHOFF resulting from subtracting a preset offset SHOFF from a ratio of the maximum value Lmax to a pixel L of image data for each pixel. A computing element 11 multiplies image data DI obtained by reading an original 1 by the camera 5 by a sum of shading data SHD and the offset SHOFF (SHD+SHOFF) for each corresponding pixel and outputs the result of multiplication as corrected image data DO.
