Date Oct. 28, 1999A process for producing an [S,S]-ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid alkali metal salt which comprises reacting fumaric acid with ethylenediamine in an aqueous medium in the presence of an ion of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth metals and transition metals by the action of ethylenediamine-disuccinic acid ethylenediamine lyase of microorganism origin, adding an alkali hydroxide to a reaction product mixture thereby to separate and recover the metal ion as an insoluble precipitate, and obtaining an [S,S]-ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid alkali metal salt.
