The present invention provides a process for purifying crude aromatic polycarboxylic acids having one or more condensed rings with two or more carboxylic acid groups on the aromatic ring or rings. The process uses solvents comprising a mixture of a major solvent and a co-solvent, wherein the major solvent is selected from a group consisting of a monocyclic compound containing two hetero-atoms, an alkylamine compound and mixtures thereof, and the co-solvent is selected from a group consisting of water, an alcohol, and mixtures thereof.
