PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection device for paper which has a function to prevent deterioration of detection accuracy caused by aged change of optical system and sensor, and to able to detect with accuracy the defect of paper's fold, breakage and stack or the like in the detection position. SOLUTION: By an output of sensor 16 indicating a condition of paper's absence, the slice levels are renewed to each paper sheet and given to the A/D converting part 18. When paper sheets are present, the detection whether these sheets are in a folded on stacked condition or not is made possible by making the sensor's output three values by using two slice levels. Then, by making the sensor's output three values and housing the same in the memory 19, a variety of data processing by the processor 20 are made possible.
